Wedgewoodium Leviosa!

my familar, Rosie

Installing the cabinets and moving back into the kitchen before putting down the flooring had one big advantage: we had a working kitchen sooner rather than later. It had a number of disadvantages, not the least of which was dealing with our antique Wedgewood stove. It weighs a frakking ton (or in honor of the proposed term for 10^27, it's hella heavy.) Back when I bought the house and moved from an apartment in Berkeley, the movers complained about the weight. But one of them complained about everything, so I didn't think much of it. When it came time for K and I to move it out and then back into the kitchen, I thought a lot more about it.

So when I installed the linoleum, I cheated. Rather than move the stove out and back in a second time (moving it out made more difficult by the space being made to exactly fit it), I rented a couple of small house jacks and lifted it out the way. The minimum time for them was a day, but it was still very much worth it. Hella easier than moving the hella heavy stove twice.

Why do you have chlorine tablets (or are those urinal cakes) on your floor?

By the way, you're the best friend ever for not asking your buddies to come over to move the stove for you.

Those are the pads the feet of the stove rest on. Rosie is playing with one of those furniture sliders (which is how we got the stove in there in the first place. With furniture sliders that is, not Rosie's help.)

The jacks are a great idea---I'd been planning to move our O'Keefe and Merritt to the backyard and then back in again during our remodel, but after reading this I'm having second thoughts! We aren't taking our kitchen down to the studs, so it would be feasible to somehow move it into the breakfast room and cover it instead...hmm. Good timing with this post! :)

@artemis: I think your O'Keefe and Merritt is probably lighter than the Wedgewood, but even still I'd keep it in the house rather than move it down and back up steps if possible. The jacks only helped me lift it, not move it, but that was enough to install the linoleum under it.

That was hella intelligent! ;-)

And it's a very good thing that the mother hasn't seen your stove. She would make me come steal it, heavy or not! :)

@NV: I could leave our front door open and nobody would steal that stove. Or at least get it further than the front walk :-)
